Description

The aim of this research project was to develop new technologies and methodologies in order to improve the quality of experimental product development. For that purpose the project focuses on furniture products. Users are required to move around virtual spaces and play with many configurable options: colours, textures, illumination and a wide catalogue of furniture (which are configurable on their own). Trying to achieve a high degree of immersion for the users of the experiment, the software was installed in a CAVE system. My group was responsible for all the development tasks, which included the creation of virtual scenes, application interaction and user data monitoring. The main tasks I worked on are listed below:

  • Implementation o aday-night lighting system integrated with the graphics engine. This allow for better scene illumination, which was not easy to achive due to the full customization of the virtual elements.
  • Mutable materials that allowed the user to change the appearance of objects without losing quality.
  • Integration of interaction device in 3D CAVE system (mouse-like device with 3D picking capabilities in real space).
